Do you live in an area that gets or is subject to a lot of snowfall?

If that is the case you need to remember that your outdoor wooden storage shed can be subject to a extreme loads in these conditions. You must already realize that a sound structure protects your contents for years to come.

Personally, I have had a built a shed about 2 years ago without a set of plans and before the winter was over my shed’s roof had fallen into itself. all my gardening tools and riding lawnmower were pretty much given into rust. We experience so much snow that it was difficult to tell that the roof had collapsed.

When purchasing a set of outdoor wood shed plans, pay careful attention to the way the roof is designed and that it meets local building codes. If it does then take your plans to your local hardware and lumber store so they can cut and prefab the necessary roof trusses for you.

Storage Shed Roofing Tips

Here are some tips to consider as soon as your roof trusses are delivered to your home from the Home Hardware & Lumber store.

1. Precise installation

Using a Pencil, mark the top plate of the wood storage shed walls every 24 inches from the center.

2. Always start from centre

Take one of your roof trusses and place it on the first mark from cent re and nail it into place. Do the same for the remaining trusses.

3. Finishing off the roof

To support roof loads most designs will call for a 5/8 inch decking to tie the trusses together. Once all the decking is installed cover it with asphalt roofing paper and finish off with shingles.

4. Get Help in certain conditions

Never install decking on a roof on a windy day. The large surface of the boards can easily catch the wind and blow you off the roof quite easily. Ask a neighbor or friend to assist when installing large roof trusses and decking material.

5. Consider the Roof Pitch

The pitch of a roof will help run off any snow of rain off the roof quickly. If you live in an area with heavy snowfall consider a steep pitch to reduce accumulation of moisture on the roof surface. Accumulated snow can apply thousands of pounds of stress load even on the most sturdy structures.

6. Decorating recommendation

Consider going with 20 year shingles and one that matches the color of your home’s roof. It creates an optical illusion that your home is in fact large than it really is and may also be a requirement if you live in a community where the home association mandates it.

Look, now before you go and build a roof for your shed, I’m sure you already know that there are many roof designs available.
